چکیده

We investigated English-learning 4-month-olds’ ability to discriminate a final rise versus fall in pitch that distinguishes questions from statements in Portuguese and English. Using visual habituation, we showed that English-learning 4-month-olds failed to categorize segmentally varied Portuguese statements vs. questions. They only succeeded when tested with restricted segmental variability in a more sensitive procedure. Finally, we showed that Basque-learning 4-month-olds have no difficulty categorizing Portuguese statements and questions. Thus, unlike their Portuguese-learning peers, English-learning 4-mo-olds are limited in their ability to distinguish Portuguese statements vs. questions. This is not simply because of the use of non-native speech stimuli, as demonstrated by the success of the Basque infants. This implies that infants’ perception of boundary tones is already language-specific at 5-months. Additionally, our results provide a way to reconcile previous puzzling findings about English-learning infants’ difficulty in categorizing English statements from questions.

Domain specificity of lexical tone perception in early infancy: lexical tones versus musical tones

In the current study, we tested the perception of pitch variations in early infancy from a domain general perspective for two auditory domains: speech and music. 4-month-old Dutch infants were tested on their discrimination of a musical relative pitch difference, a musical absolute pitch difference, and a Mandarin lexical tone difference. Our results showed that the infants failed to discrimina...

Accounting for rate-dependent category boundary shifts in speech perception

The perception of temporal contrasts in speech is known to be influenced by the speech rate in the surrounding context. This rate-dependent perception is suggested to involve general auditory processes because it is also elicited by nonspeech contexts, such as pure tone sequences. Two general auditory mechanisms have been proposed to underlie rate-dependent perception: durational contrast and n...

Perceptual effects of preceding nonspeech rate on temporal properties of speech categories.

The rate of context speech can influence phonetic perception. This study investigated the bounds of rate dependence by observing the influence of nonspeech precursor rate on speech categorization. Three experiments tested the effects of pure-tone precursor presentation rate on the perception of a [ba]-[wa] series defined by duration-varying formant transitions that shared critical temporal and ...

Perceptual magnet effect in German boundary tones

The experiment described in this paper tests for the perceptual magnet effect within the categories of high and low boundary tones in German, referring to question and statement, respectively. The experiment is based on previous work in which the categorical status of the two German boundary tones had been evaluated. The results found there showed that there was a discrimination ability within ...

The development of categorical perception of lexical tones in Mandarin-speaking preschoolers

The present study investigates how categorical perception of Mandarin tones develops along age from fourto six-year-old preschoolers. The results showed that Mandarin tones could be perceived categorically by children as young as four years of age, who were able to process tones as linguistic categories. The positions of the identification boundaries did not differ significantly between childre...
